At St Mary’s Institute Malta Ltd., our mission is to empower educators across the European Union by providing high-quality, short-term training programmes focused on teaching methodology and pedagogy. We are dedicated to enhancing the professional skills of teachers through innovative, research-informed practices that foster practical and inclusive learning environments. By supporting continuous professional development, we aim to contribute to the advancement of education across Europe and inspire excellence in teaching.

About St Mary’s Institute Malta Ltd.
St Mary’s Institute Malta Ltd. was founded to address the changing professional development needs of teachers from various European Union countries. We offer engaging, short-term training programmes specifically crafted to help educators improve their teaching skills and enhance their pedagogical methods.
Our courses aim to enhance both methodological and interpersonal skills in teaching, with a particular focus on creative teaching techniques, drama in education, intercultural and multicultural understanding, effective communication with students, and strategies for managing challenging classroom behaviours.
Besides these, participants also build a variety of important soft skills that are increasingly seen as crucial in 21st-century education, including:
- Empathy and emotional intelligence
- Conflict resolution and classroom mediation
- Collaboration and teamwork
- Leadership and initiative within educational settings
- Adaptability to diverse learning needs
- Reflective thinking and professional self-assessment
- Digital communication and media literacy
Justification and Educational Rationale
Research in educational sciences strongly advocates the integration of soft skills and pedagogical innovation into teacher training. According to Darling-Hammond et al. (2017), continuous professional learning focused on real-world teaching challenges, including interpersonal and communicative skills, results in improved student outcomes and greater teacher efficacy. Moreover, professional development that incorporates creativity, multicultural awareness, and emotional intelligence prepares teachers to handle increasingly diverse classrooms in a globalised educational landscape (OECD, 2018).
Teachers today are expected not only to transmit knowledge but also to foster social, emotional, and cognitive development among students. As such, professional development programmes must address both content delivery and educators' personal competencies. Fullan (2011) argues that successful school improvement strategies should include enhancing teachers' capacities for empathy, innovation, and relationship-building.
Short, intensive programmes like those offered by St Mary’s Institute have proven particularly effective for practising teachers who need flexible, focused, and immediately applicable training opportunities (Desimone, 2009).
Integration of English Language Development
All of our programmes are inherently linked to developing English language skills. As the global lingua franca of international education, academia, and professional communication, English is vital for European teachers working in multicultural classrooms, participating in Erasmus+ projects, or seeking access to the most recent educational research and international teaching networks.
English as a lingua franca not only improves communication across borders but also promotes intercultural understanding and cooperation. Seidlhofer (2011) notes that English has become the “default” medium for global exchange, particularly in professional settings. Furthermore, Jenkins (2015) highlights that English proficiency allows teachers to take part in international discussions on educational practice, policy, and innovation.

Our Programmes

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
This module aims to improve teachers’ ability to understand and manage their own emotions while responding sensitively to the emotional needs of their students. Educators develop skills in active listening, emotional regulation, and building empathetic relationships, which are vital for fostering psychological safety and well-being in the classroom.

Conflict Resolution and Classroom Mediation
Participants are introduced to techniques for managing and resolving interpersonal conflicts among students and between students and teachers. The module emphasises non-confrontational communication, negotiation skills, and restorative practices aimed at fostering a positive and respectful classroom environment.

Collaboration and Teamwork
This programme examines the principles and practices of effective collaboration among educators, students, and school stakeholders. It encourages cooperative planning, shared leadership, and peer support systems, preparing teachers to work more effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural educational teams.

Leadership and Initiative within Educational Settings
Educators are guided in developing leadership skills suitable for both formal and informal roles within schools. The module includes training in decision-making, change management, and motivational leadership, with the aim of empowering teachers to take initiative and lead innovative projects.
The Founders’ Vision: Why St Mary’s Institute Malta Ltd. Was Established
St Mary’s Institute Malta Ltd. was established by Dr. Piotr Jednaszewski and Mr. Simon Borda, two experts from different but complementary backgrounds, united by a common aim of promoting international teacher development through high-quality, intercultural training experiences in Malta.
Dr. Piotr Jednaszewski is a distinguished expert in the methodology of teaching English as a foreign language, an educator, court mediator, and certified translator of English. Based in the United Kingdom, he has served for many years as a representative and advisor to the University of St Andrews—one of the UK's leading academic institutions. Dr. Jednaszewski is a member of the Scientific Board of the Czech Institute of Academic Education and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in the UK. He is the author and co-author of numerous scholarly publications in the fields of negotiation, communication, language pedagogy, politics, and international relations.
His academic interests also include the management of educational institutions and the development of customised educational programmes designed to meet the specific needs of institutional stakeholders. With a career dedicated to educational excellence and innovation, Dr. Jednaszewski has extensive expertise in curriculum design, intercultural education, and strategic academic collaboration.
Simon Borda, a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality sector, has built his career around a steadfast commitment to excellence in hotel and hospitality management. As a General Manager, he is recognised for his results-driven leadership, operational effectiveness, and a consistent focus on delivering superior guest experiences. His approachable style and dedication to fostering collaborative work environments have enabled him to achieve long-term business growth and service quality across diverse teams and settings. Driven by a passion for service and organisational development, Mr. Borda brings to the Institute a strong foundation in management, logistics, and international customer engagement—skills essential for hosting educators from across Europe and ensuring their programmes run smoothly and efficiently.
Together, Dr. Jednaszewski and Mr. Borda recognised Malta’s unique position as a hub of cultural diversity, academic exchange, and professional development. Observing the increasing number of educators visiting the island for educational and cultural enrichment, they saw an opportunity to establish a specialised institution that would not only benefit from their combined networks of schools, universities, and teachers across Europe, but would also promote meaningful collaboration among educational professionals.
Thus, St Mary’s Institute Malta Ltd. was founded as a platform where experienced teachers, trainers, and academics could share best practices, engage in reflective dialogue, and improve their methodological and pedagogical skills—all within Malta’s rich educational and multicultural environment.
The Institute continues to flourish as a centre for dialogue, innovation, and professional development, reflecting the founders’ dedication to quality, inclusivity, and lifelong learning.
